HC Deb 12 May 1953 vol 515 c1047
43. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how many county councils have taken steps to ensure effective signposting of public footpaths.

Mr. H. Macmillan

I regret that I have not the information necessary to answer the hon. Member's Question.

Mr. Sorensen

Does the Minister appreciate that the system of signposting of footpaths before the war, particularly in Essex and near counties, was a great advantage to numbers of people who sought the countryside? Can he do something to expedite the vision of the counties which are taking action in this way?

Mr. Macmillan

I can only do it by exhortation. I have no power to require or control the erection of these signs.

Mr. Sorensen

Was there no record of any kind regarding these footpaths?

Mr. Macmillan

Since I have no legal power to require them, I have no legal power to require any information on the subject.
