§ 35. Mr. G. Jegerasked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that 400 houses in Ferrybridge are separated from their nearest shops by the Great North Road; and whether he will authorise the establishment of a pedestrian crossing near Ferrybridge school.
Mr. BraithwaiteWe have considered this very carefully, paying full regard to the layout of the place, the volume of traffic and the needs of pedestrians, but do not consider that a crossing would be justified.
§ Mr. JegerDoes the hon. Gentleman realise that that theory is in direct conflict with the unanimous view of the local road safety committee and of the local council? In view of the fact that on Saturday the local council was reinforced 872 by four Labour gains, is the hon. Gentleman aware that he is likely to receive stronger representations on this matter than in the past?
Mr. BraithwaiteIn reply to the first part of the hon. Member's supplementary question, he will know that we have always taken the view, which was also taken by our predecessors, that the safety of school children is best safeguarded by the provision of adult patrols. I am glad to inform the hon. Member that Socialist gains have not been accompanied by loss of life.
§ Mr. JegerThis Question refers not merely to the safeguarding of crossings for children, but also for people who live on one side of the road and have to shop on the other side.
Mr. BraithwaiteWe have had this spot carefully watched by the divisional road engineer and we do not think any change is necessary.
