HC Deb 11 May 1953 vol 515 cc864-5
26. Mr. Callaghan

asked the Minister of Transport what progress is being made by the Committee set up to consider how to remedy the pollution of our beaches and coastline by oil; and if he will impress upon them the need for an early report.

The Minister of Transport (Mr. Alan Lennox-Boyd)

I am glad to say that the Committee have made considerable progress in their consideration of this difficult problem. They are most anxious to submit a report as soon as they can and are doing everything possible to that end.

Mr. Callaghan

Can the Minister give an idea of the date?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

No, I cannot bind the Committee, but I have had a recent talk with the chairman and I know they understand the importance of getting the report out if possible before the House rises for the Summer Recess.

Mr. Edward Evans

What representations has the Minister had from the authorities of seaside resorts into the pollution of beaches. Is he aware of the great anxiety that exists there, particularly at the beginning of the summer season?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I do not think we need any more representations from the victims. What we need is an answer to the problem.
