HC Deb 07 May 1953 vol 515 c564
42. Mr. P. Wells

asked the Minister of Education the total sum spent on adaptations, repairs, provision of hutments and rents, during the past 10 years, in respect of the Sittingbourne County Grammar School for Girls.

Miss Horsbrugh

During the last 10 years, alterations and improvements, which include two class rooms now being built, have cost £10,305. The cost of repairs and rentals is available only for the last six years and has averaged' £665 a year.

Mr. Wells

Is the right hon. Lady aware that this considerable expenditure has resulted in producing an ugly, wasteful and unsatisfactory conglomeration of hutments; that the governors, parents, teachers and the local authorities are very gravely concerned about the matter, and will she scrap this policy of adding to this ugly sprawl and sanction the school of which Sittingbourne was deprived as a result of the operation of the Geddes Acts after the First World War, and which it appears her own axe is delaying now?

Miss Horsbrugh

In this matter of the enlarging and repair of schools, as the hon. Member knows, I am carrying on the policy of my predecessor. As soon as it is possible to replace all the old schools and depart from the policy of my predecessor, I shall do so.
