HC Deb 05 May 1953 vol 515 c208
58. Mr. Finlay

asked the Undersecretary of State for Commonwealth Relations if he is now in a position to make a statement as to the arrangements with the Government of India, enabling the enlistment of recruits to the Brigade of Gurkhas on Indian territory.

The Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations (Mr. John Foster)

Discussions are still in progress with the Governments of India and Nepal and I am not yet in a position to make a statement.

Mr. Finlay

Is my hon. and learned Friend aware that there are many Gurkhas who wish to give service in these excellent regiments under the British Crown; and will he do his very best to ensure that existing arrangements with the Government of India are preserved?

Mr. Foster

The negotiations will take that into consideration, of course.
