HC Deb 05 May 1953 vol 515 cc190-1
24. Mr. Hamilton

asked the President of the Board of Trade what representations have been made to Her Majesty's Government by the United States Government on the recently announced increase in trade between the United Kingdom and China; and what reply has been made.

Mr. Mackeson

No such representations have been made.

Mr. Hamilton

Has the Minister seen some of the reports in the Press, only this morning, that the investigating committee under the chairmanship of Senator McCarthy is asking the British representatives whether the sodium content of the recently announced increased exports to China will be of value in munitions, and that our representatives have given the reply that there was no possibility of it being used in that way?

Mr. Mackeson

I have answered the Question on the Order Paper. I do not think that the supplementary question arises from it, but if the hon. Member will put down a Question I shall see if I can answer it.

Mr. Hamilton

Is the Minister aware that the investigating committee under Senator McCarthy have made very scathing comments about this recently announced increase? Will he undertake to give an equally scathing reply to this very stupid man?

Mr. Mackeson

I shall give no such undertaking at all on the lines of that supplementary question.
