HC Deb 05 May 1953 vol 515 c193
26. Mr. T. Reid

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if the Government of Burma has now arranged settlement of its debt to Britain of about £27 million.

Mr. R. A. Butler

No, Sir.

Mr. Reid

Do the Government of Burma admit the validity of this debt, and is the reason why they do not repay it because of financial difficulties in Burma?

Mr. Butler

I should not like to comment on the particular difficulties of the Burma Government. Conversations have taken place with the Burma Government. We are aware of the importance of the hon. Member's Question, and we are still awaiting an answer from the Burma Government.
