HC Deb 17 March 1953 vol 512 c2061
35. Mr. Grimond

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the total British overseas investment authorised this year in the sterling area and in the rest of the world, respectively.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The total of investment outside the sterling area so far authorised during 1953 is about £24,500,000, including about £17,500,000 in Canada. No corresponding figure is available for investment in the sterling area because a substantial part of such investment does not require authorisation of any kind.

Mr. Grimond

Can the Chancellor of the Exchequer say how far, in his opinion, this country can satisfy the demand for capital in the sterling area?

Mr. Butler

We can make a pretty good showing, but we shall certainly need as much outside help as we can get.
