§ 35. Mr. Grimondasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the total British overseas investment authorised this year in the sterling area and in the rest of the world, respectively.
§ Mr. R. A. ButlerThe total of investment outside the sterling area so far authorised during 1953 is about £24,500,000, including about £17,500,000 in Canada. No corresponding figure is available for investment in the sterling area because a substantial part of such investment does not require authorisation of any kind.
§ Mr. GrimondCan the Chancellor of the Exchequer say how far, in his opinion, this country can satisfy the demand for capital in the sterling area?
§ Mr. ButlerWe can make a pretty good showing, but we shall certainly need as much outside help as we can get.
