HC Deb 05 March 1953 vol 512 c533
Mrs. Hill

I beg leave to present a Petition from the Committee and members of the Wythenshawe Swimming Club and the residents of the Wythenshawe Estate. The petitioners complain that on this estate, housing 70,000 people, with a large child population, there are no public baths. The amenity was promised in 1937 and cancelled, because of the war, in 1939. Since the war there has been no progress. The building of baths would enable the children to be taught swimming without losing much time from school, and would provide healthy exercise for the residents generally. In the cause of defence they would provide a static water supply. The Petition concludes with the following Prayer: Wherefore your Petitioners pray that permission may be granted for the building of a swimming bath in the Wythenshawe area in the City of Manchester, and your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray," etc. To lie upon the Table.
