HC Deb 30 June 1953 vol 517 c190
27. Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland in which rural parishes in the crofting counties the population is estimated to be increasing.

Mr. J. Stuart

I am sending the hon. Member a note of the 26 parishes in the seven crofting counties which show an increase in population between the 1931 and 1951 census.

Mr. Grimond

Would the right hon. Gentleman agree that in point of fact in nearly all the purely agricultural parishes the population is falling? Therefore, would he agree that there is a strong case for reconsidering the proposition to set up some sort of development board to the area?

Mr. Stuart

That is another question. It is true that in the landward areas of the seven counties there have been falls. I am sending the hon. Gentleman a note of the districts about which he asks.
