§ 24. Mr. Willeyasked the Minister of Food what profit he expects to make during 1953–54 on the purchase and sale of imported eggs.
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeImported eggs are sold at free market prices and it is not possible to give a reliable forecast of profits, if any, which may arise.
§ Mr. WilleyCan the Minister say what profit he has made to date?
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeNo, Sir; even if I could I would not do so. The hon. Gentleman knows perfectly well that this is a practice which was employed by his Government as well. The fact of the matter is that it is not possible to say what the profit will be.
§ Mr. WilleyDoes not the right hon. and gallant Gentleman agree that it is nonsense to talk about a free market if, by making a profit on the sale of imported eggs, he is supporting an uncommercial price for the retailer?
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeIt is not altogether that. The hon. Gentleman knows that at certain times of the year there are more eggs available than at others, and it is to the advantage of the consumer that we should retain some for the short period.
