HC Deb 18 June 1953 vol 516 c1168
22. Dr. Stross

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will make a statement on the assistance to be given by the Arts Council to the Carl Rosa Opera Company.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Yes, Sir. The Arts Council have arranged to cover any deficit on the autumn tour to be undertaken by the Carl Rosa Opera Company, except for its visit to Belfast, which is being dealt with through other organisations.

Dr. Stross

Will the Financial Secretary take it from me that that is a very satisfactory reply and that, in the provinces in particular, people will be glad to have this company touring again? Will he bear in mind that if the Arts Council had had sufficient funds last year we would not have missed a complete season?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I share the hon. Gentleman's satisfaction that it has been possible to meet a very widespread demand that this company should be able to tour.
