HC Deb 18 June 1953 vol 516 cc1173-4
32. Mr. G. R. Howard

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he has any further news about the setting up of a fishmeal factory in the South-West.

Sir T. Dugdale

The White Fish Authority have engaged a consulting engineer to draw up plans and estimates for the proposed fishmeal factory. The Authority are also negotiating for a site at Plymouth.

Mr. Howard

While thanking my right hon. Friend for that reply, may I ask whether he is satisfied that it will be of real benefit to the fishermen in West Cornwall, particularly Newlyn? Will they have to bear the transport costs to that factory or not?

Sir T. Dugdale

I cannot answer the last part of that supplementary question. At present the factory is entirely the responsibility of the White Fish Authority. I am keeping in the very closest touch with the developments that are taking place and I know that the authority are anxious to get it in being and working at the earliest possible moment.

Mr. Hayman

Will the Minister request the White Fish Authority to bear in mind that there is a great deal of unemployment in West Cornwall, and to consider siting the factory there?

Sir T. Dugdale

The decision where the factory is to be sited, has, I think, already been taken.
