HC Deb 17 June 1953 vol 516 c954
17. Mr. F. Maclean

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs under what circumstances the news of the successful ascent of Mount Everest was withheld from the King of Nepal by the British Embassy in Khatmandu until after he had already learned of it from other sources.

The Joint Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Anthony Nutting)

Her Majesty's Ambassador informed the King of Nepal of the ascent of Everest at the first opportunity. The King's Senior Counsellor has confirmed to Her Majesty's Ambassador that the King did not hear of the ascent from any other source before the news was conveyed to him by the Ambassador early on 2nd June.
