HC Deb 16 June 1953 vol 516 cc715-6
19. Mr. G. Longden

asked the Minister of Labour whether exemption from National Service is granted to men who enter the service of the Merchant Navy, a foreign airline or a British airline.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour and National Service (Mr. Harold Watkinson)

No, Sir; but men serving in the Merchant Navy are not in present circumstances called up for service in the Forces so long as they remain in that employment. This does not apply to men employed by British or foreign airlines.
