43. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland to make a statement on the negotiations for the sale of herring to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Mr. J. Stuart

Negotiations are still proceeding.

Mr. Hughes

Is the Minister aware that a statement has been published in the Scottish Press indicating that a £1 million contract has been signed? Could he give us any information about that?

Mr. Stuart

I shall certainly inform this House at the first possible moment, but negotiations have been extended to cover not only herrings and we are not in a position at the present moment to announce the final agreement.

Mr. Hector Hughes

Does that mean that the contract includes not only herrings but also white fish?

Mr. Stuart

I would not like the hon. and learned Member to take it that it includes everything that he wishes.
