HC Deb 22 July 1953 vol 518 cc353-4
9. Captain Ryder

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General what steps he is taking to meet the demand for new telephones in Merton and Morden.

The Assistant Postmaster-General (Mr. David Gammans)

Additional exchange equipment and new cables are being provided. The first of these extensions should be ready early next year, and from then on I hope there will be a steady improvement in the rate of providing telephone service in the district.

Captain Ryder

Can my hon. Friend give some indication about the extent to which new telephones will be supplied?

Mr. Gammans

I hope that early next year cables to provide for about 1,300 applicants will be completed.
