32. Miss Wardasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will move to set up a Select Committee to examine the financial difficulties of women teachers, women civil servants and women local government officers who, owing to lower rates of pay than men for equal responsibility, are finding increasing difficulty in carrying out their responsibilities.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterNo, Sir. My right hon. Friend does not think a Committee such as my hon. Friend suggests is necessary.
Miss WardIs my hon. Friend aware that I consider it bad leadership for Parliament to protect its own interest by the appointment of a Select Committee to consider Member's expenses and deprive its own employees of the same protection? I believe that employees come first and employers afterwards. I should be glad to know whether my hon. Friend accepts that as a proper definition of good employers.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterMy hon. Friend is perfectly well aware that the attitude 195 of Her Majesty's Government on this question has been very clearly stated in the House.
