HC Deb 02 July 1953 vol 517 c561
3. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the sum spent on intoxicating liquor in Coronation week; and his estimate of the increased revenue likely to result from increased consumption of liquor during this period.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I have no information from which to estimate expenditure on alcoholic liquor, or consequent changes in revenue, for so short a period as one week.

Mr. Hughes

Is not the Minister optimistic about getting increased revenue as a result of the celebrations? Is he aware that the brewers and distillers are so enthusiastic about their revenue that they are pressing for an annual Coronation?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Celebrations are always a cause for optimism.
