§ 54. Mr. Hector Hughesasked the Assistant Postmaster-General if he is yet in a position to state when the new television station for Aberdeen will be available for use; where it will be situated; and how far it will be effective to transmit pictures to the whole North of Scotland.
§ The Assistant Postmaster-General (Mr. David Gammans)A general statement about the development of the television service will be made tomorrow. The B.B.C. station for Aberdeen is to be at Core Hill in Aberdeenshire and the Corporation expects that it will give a satisfactory service over most of the counties of Moray, Banff, Aberdeen and Kincardine, and over part of Angus.
§ Mr. HughesWhile thanking the Minister for that answer, which will be much appreciated by the whole of the North-East of Scotland, may I ask him whether it is not a striking fact that this announcement was made possible by public opinion and the churches having killed sponsored television?
§ Mr. GammansI think that the hon. and learned Member had better wait and hear what the television statement is tomorrow.
§ Lady TweedsmuirCan my hon. Friend tell us when the service will be in full operation?
§ Mr. GammansI think that must wait until tomorrow, too.
§ Mr. PopplewellWill the Minister assure the House that no broadcast wavelength allocation is given for this or any other television station until such time 399 as there is a separate wavelength given for Northern Ireland and North-East England?
§ Mr. GammansI think that must wait until tomorrow, too.
