HC Deb 29 January 1953 vol 510 c1165
3. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Education what number of teachers trained in Welsh colleges have obtained employment in Wales during the past year.

Miss Horsbrugh

According to information supplied by Welsh local education authorities 363 newly trained teachers were appointed from Welsh training colleges to maintained and assisted schools in Wales during the year.

Mr. Thomas

Is the Minister aware that for many years the great majority of these Welsh teachers have had to cross Offa's Dyke to educate the English? Is she further aware that despite the readiness of the Welsh people to give a helping hand where it is required, we want her, in view of the largely increased classes, to increase the quota of teachers allowed to local authorities?

Miss Horsbrugh

I think the hon. Member knows that the quota of women teachers allowed to Welsh local education authorities is already generous compared with that allowed to English authorities.
