HC Deb 20 January 1953 vol 510 cc15-6
20. Mr. Osborne

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he expects to receive a report from the Committee he appointed last July to consider rebates on unsold retail goods.

Mr. R. A. Butler

I take it my hon. Friend has in mind the Committee which is considering the question of stocks on an alteration of Purchase Tax or Customs and Excise Duty. I cannot say exactly when the Committee will report, but I expect that it will be in the near future.

Mr. Osborne

In view of the fact that this is of considerable concern to a lot of small shopkeepers, will the Chancellor do all he can to hasten this report and see if something cannot be done, if possible before the next Budget?

Mr. Butler

Yes, I am keen to see as early a report as possible.
