HC Deb 20 January 1953 vol 510 cc32-3
57. Sir H. Williams

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he has any further statement to make with regard to the effect of detergents producing foam corroding sanitary fittings and causing dermatitis.

Mr. Marples

Investigations into these questions are continuing.

Sir H. Williams

Would my hon. Friend say when he is likely to be able to make a statement?

Mr. Marples

Not at the moment because it is difficult to get evidence of. for example. sewage plants being corroded. Many accusations have been made but very little specific evidence is available, and if any hon. Member has information about corrosion I should he grateful if they would send us the information.

Mr. Bevan

Will the hon. Gentleman inquire of the Ministry of Health who would be able to obtain the information from hospitals, as to the extent to which these detergents are causing dermatitis because, when I was Minister of Health, I was informed that it involved a considerable increase?

Mr. Marples

There have been a few cases recorded in a number of places, but nothing conclusive has yet been forthcoming from the Ministry of Health.
