58. Mr. Leeasked the Minister of Labour whether he will make a statement regarding the implementation of the Rees Committee Report on Night Baking; and when he proposes to introduce legislation.
§ Sir W. MoncktonI announced in the House on 24th July, 1952, that the Government had accepted the recommendations of the Rees Committee in principle with certain modifications, and would introduce legislation for the purpose at a convenient opportunity. Since then my Department has had discussions with both sides of the industry about the desirability of modifying the recommendations in the case of three-shift plan bakeries. While I am anxious to proceed as quickly as possible, I cannot yet say when legislation can be introduced.
Miss LeeWould the Minister agree that the night bakers have been exceedingly courteous and patient for many years now, and that we have had many similar replies to the one he has given today? Can we expect action very soon?
§ Sir W. MoncktonThis matter has been the subject of various inquiries since 1919, and I hope that in my time something may be done. I am doing my best. We hope to get an answer about the three-shift bakeries very soon.
