15. Mr. Philips Priceasked the Minister of Agriculture the number of orders that have been made on landlords under the Agriculture Act, 1947, requiring them to improve or repair their buildings or drain their land during the last three years in England and Wales.
§ Sir T. DugdaleFive hundred and thirteen owners of agricultural land were placed under supervision for estate management during the three years ended 31st December, 1952. In addition, a number of directions relating to fixed equipment were given without a supervision order being made. Separate figures for such directions are not readily available for this three year period, but a total of 400 had been issued under the Act up to 31st December, 1952.
Mr. PriceIn the case of those who have been put under supervision in this respect, has it had the necessary effect?
§ Sir T. DugdaleBy and large, I should say, yes.
§ Sir W. SmithersHow much longer is my right hon. Friend going on enforcing provisions of a Socialist Act of Parliament designed as a first step to the nationalisation of the land, under which he can dispossess farmers, or inquire into farmers' affairs, and the farmers have no right of appeal on questions of merit or of fact?
§ Sir T. DugdaleI have replied to the Question.
