asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies to what extent increased charges have been levied on telephone subscribers in Cyprus by Cable and Wireless, Limited; and how the new rates compare with the former charges.

Mr. Lyttelton

Increased rates to take effect from the 1st January, 1953, are under discussion in Cyprus and it is not yet possible to say what the outcome will be.

Captain Ryder

Is it not a fact that many subscribers have refused to renew their agreement with Cable and Wireless, Limited, because the charges are to be doubled in March? On the face of it, does not this seem to be a very stiff increase?

Mr. Lyttelton

I must ask my hon. and gallant Friend to wait until negotiations are further advanced.
