HC Deb 23 February 1953 vol 511 cc1704-5
16. Mr. E. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many consulates Her Majesty's Government maintains on the mainland of China and on the island of Formosa, respectively.

Mr. Nutting

Her Majesty's Government maintain a consular post at Shanghai on the mainland and at Tamsui on Formosa. There is also a consular section in Her Majesty's Embassy at Peking.

Mr. Johnson

Would it be true to say that Her Majesty's representative in Formosa enjoys very reasonable facilities for looking after the interests of the British on that island?

Mr. Nutting

I think that Her Majesty's consul at Formosa is both well treated by the provincial authorities to whom he is accredited and is discharging an important and useful function in that capacity.
