HC Deb 18 February 1953 vol 511 cc1223-4
17. Mr. E. Johnson

asked the Minister of Food at how many markets held on Saturdays calves are sold for slaughter; and for how long they are kept before being killed.

Major Lloyd George

Ten. The calves are slaughtered either on the same day or on the following day.

Mr. Johnson

Can the Minister say how it is possible to slaughter calves sold on a Saturday the same day or the following day, when so few slaughterhouses, if any, are open; and what arrangements are made for the feeding of the calves until such time as they are slaughtered? Is he satisfied that these arrangements are adequate?

Major Lloyd George

If the hon. Gentleman has any instances where they are not satisfactory, I shall be happy to look into them.
