HC Deb 02 February 1953 vol 510 cc1470-1
44. Mr. Fenner Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement regarding British policy in the Far East.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

As my right hon. Friend stated in reply to the right hon. and learned Gentleman the Member for Rowley Regis and Tipton (Mr. A. Henderson) on 29th October last, the policy of Her Majesty's Government is that an armistice must be concluded in Korea before progress can be made in discussion of a wider settlement in the Far East as a whole. Her Majesty's Government have done, and will continue to do, everything in their power to bring about such an armistice on honourable terms.

Mr. Brockway

Is the right hon. and learned Gentleman aware of the very wide and deep apprehension in this country regarding the association of our policy with the development of American policy in the Far East, particularly as illustrated in the last two days by the decision to deneutralise Formosa Island?

Mr. Lloyd

There is to be a Private Notice Question later dealing with the last part of the hon. Gentleman's supplementary question.
