§ 49. Sir R. Aclandasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, in view of the fact that it is disclosed in the verbatim transcript of the trial in Kenya of Sergeant Keats and P.O. Reubens on charges of offences against an African named Elijah, that witnesses at the trial swore on oath that the District Commissioner in charge of the inquest on Elijah had instructed them to make untrue statements for the sake of hushing the matter up, what action has been taken to investigate the truth of this evidence, what proceedings have been brought against the District Commissioner for his irregular action; and whether he will put a copy of the verbatim transcript in the Library of the House of Commons.
§ Mr. LytteltonI have asked the Governor for a report and will write to the hon. Member when I receive it.
§ Sir R. AclandIf it be possible quickly to put a copy of this verbatim transcript into the hands of the right hon. Gentleman, will he have it specially studied and, in the meantime, accept my assurance that it reveals an extraordinarily horrible state of affairs involving many high officers?
§ Mr. LytteltonI think in the present state of this case such a suggestion is a little unfortunate.
