HC Deb 23 April 1953 vol 514 c1389
35. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what subsistence allowance is granted to special police constables.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

A special constable may be paid a refreshment allowance of 1s. 6d. when on duty for under five hours. For periods in excess of five hours subsistence allowances are payable at the rates payable to regular police sergeants and constables; these rates are now under review.

Mr. Thomas

Is the Minister satisfied that these subsistence allowances compare satisfactorily with those granted to Civil Defence workers and to similar people who would bear similar expenses?

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

In the review to which I have referred I will see that special attention is paid to the point raised by the hon. Member.

Mr. Thomas

I thank the Home Secretary very much.
