§ 18. Mr. Doddsasked the Minister of Agriculture why the White Fish Authority have decided to shelve their frozen fish schemes; which sections of the industry have raised objections to the proposals; and what is the main cause for the opposition to a plan to reduce the surplus of fish during periods of plenty so as to ensure additional stocks of frozen fish for the public when fish is scarce.
§ Sir T. DugdaleThe Authority have decided to defer for six months the submission to Ministers of a frozen fish scheme in order to give the trade an opportunity to make alternative proposals. Objections had been made to the draft scheme by various associations representative of catchers, freezers and distributors on the grounds that the scheme was unnecessary or unworkable and that dealings in frozen fish should continue to be left to the trade.
§ Mr. DoddsIs there not sufficient evidence to indicate now that the question of six months is immaterial, but that objections, one after another, are being put up against these proposals, and that there seems to be no sign of people getting a square deal with regard to fish unless the Government take stronger action?
§ Sir T. DugdaleSo far as this particular proposal is concerned, I hope the hon. Gentleman realises that it would be improper for me to make any comment upon the scheme until it has been received by me for confirmation, which has not yet happened.
Mr. T. WilliamsWould not the right hon. Gentleman regard it as part of his duties to invite the Authority to let him know what schemes they have in mind?
§ Sir T. DugdaleYes, Sir. I will do this in the next six months. May I add that I am sure the House would like me to say how nice it is to see the right hon. Gentleman back in his place once more.
