HC Deb 15 April 1953 vol 514 c171
2. Mr. Fenner Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement regarding the visit of the Minister of State to the Sudan.

The Minister of State (Mr. Selwyn Lloyd)

As the hon. Member is no doubt aware, I made a statement on this subject on 2nd April.

Mr. Fenner Brockway

Is the right hon. and learned Gentleman now able to say when elections are likely to take place in the Sudan?

Mr. Lloyd

No, I am not yet able to say that. The Electoral Commission was appointed on 6th April and I think they have that matter very much in mind.

Mr. Fenner Brockway

May I ask whether the prospects are that it will be possible to hold the elections this summer, or will they have to be postponed until the autumn?

Mr. Lloyd

I do not know the answer to that question. I think I had better not guess at the moment.
