HC Deb 14 April 1953 vol 514 c33

3.36 p.m.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr. R. A. Butler)

When I opened my first Budget some 13 months ago, I began, as is customary, with a review of the previous year. The account I gave was as objective as I could make it and was inevitably a bleak one, a story of mounting deficits overseas and of inflation at home. The difference today is very striking.
