HC Deb 29 October 1952 vol 505 c1925
46. Mr. M. MacPherson

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Defence what immediate, and what long-term, plans he has for meeting the needs of the Armed Forces for science graduates.

Mr. Birch

To meet their immediate needs the Services make every effort to induce science and engineering graduates leaving the universities to take on permanent or short-service commissions. Reliance is also being increasingly placed on technical cadet schemes within the Services. Special arrangements are made each year to ensure the best possible use by the Services of science and engineering graduates who become available for call-up under the National Service Acts.

As regards long-term plans, there is already machinery for reviewing the whole question of the national needs for scientific manpower, of which the requirements of the Forces form only a part.
