HC Deb 29 October 1952 vol 505 cc1915-6
23. Mr. Tilney

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in order to stimulate public interest in the Atlantic Community, he will consult our allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, with a view to the adoption of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation flag.

Mr. Nutting

This proposition is being studied in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Mr. Tilney

Would not my hon. Friend agree that N.A.T.O. is as important an association for peace as the United Nations who have a well known flag, and does not he think that by focusing the eyes of the public on one symbol more and more people in the Western World will come to recognise the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation as a partnership for peace and for an expanding oceanic economy?

Mr. Nutting

No doubt those considerations will be before the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation when considering this matter.

Mr. Noel-Baker

Is not the purpose of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to support the Charter of the United Nations?

Mr. Nutting

Yes, Sir.

Major Legge-Bourke

Is my hon. Friend aware that the Union Jack has been quite good enough for a great many people up to now?
