HC Deb 23 October 1952 vol 505 cc1237-8
2. Dr. Stross

asked the Minister of Health what evidence is available of the toxic effects following the use of detergents in cleansing glass and crockery; and what figures he has as to the incidence of dermatitis following their use.

Mr. Iain Macleod

I am not aware of any.

Dr. Stross

Has the Minister not been made aware that detergents tend to cause dermatitis, chapped hands, and so on? Is he not aware it is agreed that if glasses and crockery are not adequately washed after being dipped into detergents a cumulative dose is gradually taken into the human body and that that is not good for it?

Mr. Macleod

I do not dispute that, but that is not the Question that I have been asked. It is true that any strong solution might lead to dermatitis, but the Minister of Labour and the Minister of National Insurance—and I have inquired from them both—and I have no such evidence as is referred to in the Question.
