HC Deb 11 November 1952 vol 507 c743
13. Mr. Swingler

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, on what lines it is intended to pursue research into the special causes of lung cancer in gas workers through the agency of the Medical Research Council.

Mr. Molson

The Medical Research Council has arranged for one of its expert committees to examine the possibilities. Until this committee has had time to consider the problem in detail, I shall not be able to indicate which lines of research are likely to be the most promising.

Mr. Swingler

Will the hon. Gentleman ask his noble Friend to pursue this matter energetically? Would he consult the Minister of Fuel and Power, because one of the troubles is that two-thirds of the gas boards do not employ full-time medical staffs? Would this committee, therefore, enter into consultation with the Minister of Fuel and Power on that aspect and arrange for research?

Mr. Molson

The whole matter is under careful consideration, and investigations have been made, as I indicated to the hon. Member on 21st October. The matter is still being followed up.
