HC Deb 10 November 1952 vol 507 c594
59. Mr. Callaghan

asked the Minister of Transport to what extent military vehicles belonging to Service Departments or to allied Powers are exempt from the regulations governing the maximum width of vehicles used on roads in this country; and what arrangements he has made with the authorities concerned so that they may use vehicles whose width is greater than the legal maximum.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

It is essential to allow the use on the roads of this country of certain Service vehicles, whether British or allied, which exceed the maximum width permitted by the normal regulations. The Orders providing for these exemptions are somewhat detailed and complicated and I hope to remake them in a consolidated and up-to-date form in the near future.

Mr. Callaghan

Will they provide for the Minister to be notified in advance where these movements take place, and if not, should not they do so?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I am sure the hon. Gentleman agrees with the need to facilitate the work conducted in this country by our allies, but I will certainly look at that point in detail.
