HC Deb 21 May 1952 vol 501 cc455-6
25. Sir R. Acland

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when he expects to receive a report of the inquiry into the powers of colonial governors to order deportations; and whether he will consider the advisability of postponing the introduction of new ordinances in this respect until after the report has been received

Mr. Hopkinson

As regards the first part of the Question, I am unable to add to the reply which my right hon. Friend gave to the hon. Member for Orkney and Shetland (Mr. Grimond) on 26th March. As regards the second part of the Question, no new legislation will be enacted before the statement promised on 26th March is made, save possibly in territories where, as then stated, special circumstances exist.

Sir R. Acland

In asking the right hon. Gentleman to transmit to his right hon. Friend best wishes for his forthcoming visit to Africa, might I ask him whether the Gambia is not one of the places where action of this kind might be postponed for a little until that report is made available?
