HC Deb 20 May 1952 vol 501 cc249-50
20. Mr. Deedes

asked the Secretary of State for War how many houses are being constructed by his Department at the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Depot, Ashford why work on them has ceased and when it is expected that work will resume.

Mr. Head

Forty-five houses are being built there. Work on these houses has ceased temporarily owing to the default of the contractor; it is expected that work will be resumed in about three to five months' time.

Mr. Deedes

Is my right hon. Friend aware that in an expanding community like this where a lot of houses are wanted it is rather unfortunate that a contract in the hands of a Government Department should be held up and very obviously held up for all to see? Will he do what he can to get the dispute settled?

Mr. Head

Yes, Sir. I regret the holdup every bit as much as my hon. Friend, particularly as these are married quarters. We are going on as quickly as we can.
