asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the increased cost of copper and the comparatively large size of our copper coins, he will consider reducing the diameters.

The disadvantage, particularly to automatic machine users and to the banks, of the simultaneous circulation of coins having the same value but different weights will be apparent to the hon. Member.

The alternative of replacing all existing bronze coins in one operation would, as I told the hon. Member for Newport (Mr. Peter Freeman) on 13th November last, place an impossible burden on our resources of labour and material
