HC Deb 25 March 1952 vol 498 c205
46. Captain Robert Ryder

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, in view of the recent increases in Civil Service pay, and the rise in the cost of living, he realises that Section 20 of the Superannuation Act, 1834, operates unfairly; and if he will take action to meet this complaint.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr. R. A. Butler)

I do not regard this provision as unfair. The answer to the last part is therefore, "No, Sir."

Captain Ryder

Will my right hon. Friend bear in mind that, in spite of what he said, there is a wide sense of grievance in this matter? How is it that Colonial Government officers do not suffer from this penalty whereas those at home do?

Mr. Butler

I will certainly investigate any special aspect of the question and, in particular, the one which my hon. and gallant Friend has brought to my attention.

Captain Ryder

Will my right hon. Friend bear in mind that I have written a letter to him on this subject?
