HC Deb 17 March 1952 vol 497 c1909
34. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the large and growing number of accidents on the road, he will revise the Highway Code by recommending stricter conditions to be observed by motorists, pedestrians and other users of the roads.

The Minister of Transport (Mr. John Maclay)

I have just received a report containing recommendations by the Committee on Road Safety for improving the Highway Code and for making it a stronger force in promoting safety on the roads. I am giving this report urgent consideration.

Mr. Godfrey Nicholson

Will my hon. Friend bear in mind that the Highway Code is an example of very bad English and will he see that any future edition is decently and clearly expressed?

Mr. Maclay

I will certainly study that point very carefully.

Mr. Freeman

Is the hon. Gentleman aware of the very serious increase in the figures for both injuries and fatalities, and will he take every step to have this published and made available for the public at the earliest possible moment?

Mr. Maclay

Yes, Sir, subject to examination of the report.
