HC Deb 30 June 1952 vol 503 c4
7. Mrs. White

asked the Minister of Supply what progress has been made by the working party which has been considering the use of rayon textiles by the public services.

Mr. Sandys

The suitability of rayon fabrics for Service and Civil Defence use has been re-examined. As a result the rayon industry will shortly be given an opportunity to tender for goods to a value of about £1½ million. In addition, the War Office and Air Ministry have decided to undertake troop trials of drill uniforms, women's underwear, pyjamas and sheets made of rayon fabric, with a view to considering a more extensive use of these materials for Service requirements.

Mrs. White

Is the Minister aware that while the amount which he states is not great in relation to the total production of the industry, it is a considerable advance on the £16,000 worth which was the original amount ordered? May I thank him very much for the work which has been done by the working party, presided over by his hon. Friend, which will give great encouragement to the industry?

Mr. Sandys

I thank the hon. Lady. It is at any rate a start, and I hope it will lead to bigger things.
