HC Deb 31 July 1952 vol 504 cc1657-8
1. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the cost of the new accommodation for staff at Holloway Prison; and for whom it is being provided.

The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Sir David Maxwell Fyfe)

The new accommodation for staff at Holloway Prison is being provided in pursuance of the general policy of providing modern hostel accommodation for women officers outside the prison walls, and also in order to ensure that sufficient accommodation is available when the staff of the prison reaches its full numbers. The complete scheme, which will provide a hostel for 42 officers and two flats for Assistant Governors, is estimated to cost£63,000.

Lieut-Colonel Lipton

Is the whole scheme to be put into effect at once, or is it limited to the provision of two flats for two doctors at a cost of£7,000 each?

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The preliminary part of the scheme includes, among other things, the demolition of a security wall. The second part will comprise the adaptation of the old remand hospital as a hostel.
