HC Deb 30 July 1952 vol 504 cc1460-2
20. Mr. Fenner Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what resolution has been adopted by the Trusteeship Council of the United Nations in regard to the appeal of the Wemeru against eviction from their land: and what action Her Majesty's Government proposes to take.

Mr. Lyttelton

I am arranging for the Council's Resolution, which is long, to be published in the OFFICIAL REPORT. I am consulting the Governor about the action to he taken.

Mr. Brockway

In view of the scarcely veiled rebuke which is embodied in this Resolution, will the right hon. Gentleman consider having some discussions with the representatives of the tribes to alleviate homelessness, hunger, and the subjection to disease from which they are suffering, and will he carry out the proposals of the Trusteeship Council in not carrying through these forcible evictions in the future?

Mr. Lyttelton

I regard the supplementary question as largely tendentious in nature and could not answer it now. The hon. Gentleman will see the Resolution, which I do not think supports what he has said in his supplementary question.

Following is the Resolution:
