§ Sir R. CaryMay I raise a point of procedure now that we are about to reach the Orders of the Day? May I draw your attention, Mr. Speaker, I hope without offending the general opinion of the House, to the great length of the vast majority of the speeches in yesterday's debate? I am wondering whether through you, Sir, the House could mutually agree on some form of self-denying ordinance in today's debate in regard to the length of speeches which would give Private Members a greater opportunity to catch your eye?
Mr. SpeakerI have every sympathy with the hon. Gentleman, but I have no power to enforce it. Yesterday we had only 11 speeches in the course of the whole day, which does not enable me nearly to satisfy the number of hon. Members who desire to speak.
