HC Deb 30 July 1952 vol 504 c1459
17. Mr. Foot

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has considered the request from the Jamaica Agricultural Society to send a delegation to Jamaica to discuss the future of the bulk purchase contracts.

Mr. Lyttelton

I have received no such request.

Mr. Foot

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the announcement of the request was printed in the agricultural Press in Jamaica and that the proposal for such a delegation arose because of the fear that the British Government was to abandon long-term bulk purchase contracts with the banana industry? Will he do everything in his power to dissuade the Ministry of Food from taking any such course?

Mr. Lyttelton

That is another question, but I might add that the Minister of Food hopes very shortly to discuss the matter of the marketing of bananas with representatives of the Jamaican interests.
