HC Deb 29 July 1952 vol 504 cc1260-1
8. Mr. Anthony Greenwood

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the textile industry in the Rossendale Valley has been adversely affected by the serious increase in the cost of electricity which has followed upon the introduction of tariff M in April, 1952; and what plans he has for alleviating the situation.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

I am aware of the increase in electricity charges affecting the textile industry in the Rossendale Valley and elsewhere. I understand that discussions are in progress between the North Western Electricity Board and representatives of the textile industries concerned.

Mr. Greenwood

Can the President of the Board of Trade say whether these negotiations are also affecting other parts of Lancashire, because this is a wide problem in the textile industry?

Mr. Thorneycroft

Not without notice.

Mr. L. M. Lever

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the textile industry in the entire Rossendale Valley will be seriously affected by the importation of cotton under any Czechoslovakian agreement?
